WHAT IS DOT TESTING?

A five-panel drug screen, known as a DOT drug test, is conducted for employees
holding safety-sensitive positions within organizations regulated by the U.S.
Department of Transportation (DOT). These screenings are mandatory before
employment commencement, at designated intervals, and following specific
events occurring during the course of employment.

WHAT DOES DOT DRUG TESTS FOR?

Under DOT regulations, DOT drug tests must screen for the following substances to detect
whether an applicant or employee has recently used some or more of them:

  • Marijuana (THC)

  • Phencyclidine (PCP)

  • Amphetamines

  • Opiates (heroin, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, oxycodone, and oxymorphone)

  • Cocaine

WHO IS REQUIRED TO TAKE DOT DRUG TESTS?

Employers regulated by the following DOT agencies are required to send applicants and employees for DOT drug tests:

  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)

  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

  • Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)

  • Federal Transit Administration (FTA)

  • Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)

  • U.S. Coast Guard (USCG)

  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Additional businesses whom may benefit from receiving a DOT drug test:

  • Schools & Colleges

  • Warehouses

  • Unions

  • Daycares

  • State agencies - Probation, CPS, & Drug Court
